Multiple media outlets are reporting that Alabama reserve offensive lineman Evan Cardwell is not expected to return to the team this fall.

The 6-foot-2, 279-pounder has had to deal with a chronic back ailment and may give up football altogether or take a medical redshirt. He has already earned his undergraduate degree but still has one year of eligibility remaining since he redshirted as a true freshman in 2005.

More attrition is expected as Alabama works to get under the 85 scholarship limit. Alabama head coach Nick Saban, who has not confirmed Cardwell's departure, is expected to provide a full report of the attrition undergone by the team since the spring when he meets with the media.

Cardwell backed up Antoine Caldwell at center last season and was expected to enter fall camp in a back-up role again. He started seven games at center in 2007.
