Alabama football holds first two-a-day practice of 2014 camp

Prac0806_013The Alabama football team held its sixth and seventh practices today at the Thomas-Drew practice fields today.  The team was in full pads this morning but wore helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for its second practice of the day. The Tide worked on the back field closest to Hackberry and the Jack’s restaurant (well, they get the publicity from the pictures, why not a mention in the article) this evening  after working on the two main fields this morning.

The most notable news coming out this morning’s practice was the absence of A’Shawn Robinson. The sophomore reportedly sprained his knee and could miss a few practices but he should be good to go by the season opener in Atlanta. With Jarran Reed and Brandon Ivory out for violation of team rules, the sophomore’s absence was very visible and could cause major concern for the defensive line if he is out much longer.  Robinson is a preseason selection to the Bronko Nagurski and Outland Trophy watch lists.  The trio of Ivory, Reed and Robinson made up the teams first team D-line during A-Day.Prac0806_003

Sophomore Dalvin Tomlinson has been working at the nose tackle position along with Jonathan Allen and both have really worked hard to impress Saban and staff – especially Tomlinson.  “Dalvin has done really well,” Saban said after Tuesday’s practice. “We’re very pleased with Dalvin and where he is”.  Tomlinson didn’t play last year due to a torn ACL which he suffered in the first game of the season and he red-shirted in 2012.

Trey DePriest was again with the middle linebackers and didn’t appear to be hindered by the slight knee injury this morning, but wore a brace this evening and seemed to have a little gimp in his step.  It doesn’t appear to be serious, just “the usual bumps and bruises” as Nick Saban said in his press conference this week.  DePriest was working behind Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster in the line-up though. Another note on the middle linebackers was that Ryan Anderson was working with the outside linebacker group in the morning session.

Prac0806_017The offensive line notes: Ryan Kelly is the anchor of the offensive line with Bradley Bozeman and J.C. Hassenauer both working behind him. Josh Casher was seeing some time there earlier this week but was working with the left guard tonight.  On the left side of the ball is Cam Robinson and senior Arie Kouandjio seemed to be paired with the first team with Brandon Green and Ross Pierchbacher working behind Robinson. Dominick Jackson appeared to be back at right guard behind Alphonse Taylor and while Austin Shepherd was of course at right tackle with Grant Hill behind him. (see YouTube video)

The running backs seem to be the most stable of the positions this far into camp with Yeldon, Henry, Drake and Fowler leading the pecking order. However, that lineup could change if last year’s fumble problems remain. Running backs coach Burton Burns is doing everything in his power to change that and even introducing new and innovative drills aimed at balance and ball control but it still comes down to “a mental thing” as TJ Yeldon described in a press conference on Friday of last week.

Alabama is scheduled to practice once tomorrow with their next two-a-day coming on Friday.  The first scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday at Bryant-Denny at 2:30 and is closed to the public.
