Prac0801PM_01Alabama held their second practice of training camp this evening where incoming freshman and newcomers were able to have some individualized attention with the coaches.  The sessions intent is to give those new to the program a “way to ease into the program and learn the way of doing things” as Nick Saban said in his press conference this afternoon.  The full team will practice together for the first time on Saturday and this extra work should help to keep up the pace of the drills.

Nick Saban and Kirby Smart were in their usual places with the corners and safeties respectively.  Marlon Humphrey and Maurice Smith were working with the head coach and seemed to be getting a good share of the attention from Saban on fundamentals and instruction.  As expected Ronnie Clark was working with Smart along with Laurence ‘Hootie’ Jones and a couple of others at the safety position.  Smart was by far the loudest of all the coaches this evening while giving instruction and getting the players to pay attention to details.

Rashan Evans worked with the outside linebackers with Coach Lance Thompson along with Jamie Mosley, and Christian Miller.  Evans, at 225, showed very good quickness but Thompson had to stop the group and make them re-do the drill a time of two. Prac0801PM_12

Participating in drills at the inside linebacker position was Keith Holcombe along with Walker Jones.  Kevin Steele stopped the drills at one point to go over the base set and walk through what was expected at the position.  (See Youtube Video).  Coach Bo Davis worked with the defensive ends including Da’Shawn Hand and others as they seemed to be getting a little extra instruction on keeping in a straight line and not drifting up-field during a slide drill.

On the offensive side of the ball quarterback David Cornwell was throwing some really nice deep balls to receivers Cameron Sims, Raheem Falkins, Derek Kief, and ArDarius Stewart. Alec Morris was the other QB during the evening session and he seemed to be having a good night as well passing to the receiving corps as well as to the running backs Altee Tenpenny, and Tyren Jones.  Speaking of running backs, with Bo Scarbrough not qualifying academically there doesn’t appear to be a freshman running back in the mix for the 2014 season. “Scarbrough is very close to qualifying….we have a plan here at his high school [Tuscaloosa County High School] to do the things he needs to do in order to be able to qualify and the goal is to get him here in January” said Nick Saban earlier today.

Prac0801PM_18On the offensive line Joshua Casher, J.C. Hassenauer, Isaac Luatua, and Ross Pierschbacher worked with Coach Mario Cristobal on blocking drills and footwork.  And, as usual Bobby Williams worked with the tight ends and this evening that was Kurt Freitag, and Ty Flournoy-Smith.
