Alabama Baseball holds on in the 9th to defeat Florida State in an elimination game
The No. 2 seeded Alabama baseball team found some offense in their second game of the NCAA Tallahassee Regionals to end No. 1 seed Florida State’s season with the win 6-5 at Dick Howser Stadium. After dropping their first game on Friday against No. 3 seeded Kennesaw State 1-0 the Crimson Tide fell to the loser’s bracket. Florida State suffered a 7-0 loss to the fourth-seeded Georgia Southern Eagles later the same day. The elimination game between Alabama and Florida State was never really close until the last three outs fo the game. Alabama allowed only two hits in the ninth but gave up five runs making the game much closer than it should have been.
Right-handed pitcher Justin Kamplain started the game on the mound and didn’t exit until the ninth inning when the Seminoles Nogowski singled up the middle which is when head coach Mich Gaspard made the call to the bullpen for Jon Keller. Kamplain gets the win and moves to 7-3 on the year with three strikeouts allowing five hits but no runs. Kamplain started all nine innings when left-handed pitcher Keller entered the game for only three batters but it wasn’t because of three outs. Keller hit his first batter, walked the second and hit the third giving Florida State their first run of the Regional and 17 innings. Gaspard made another call to the bullpen for left-hander Thomas Burrows with no outs and bases loaded and up 6-1.
Alabama’s Burrows walked in his first two batters to cut the Alabama lead in half before getting his first strikeout and first out of the inning with bases still loaded. The next Seminole batter flew out to Georgie Salem in center field for the second out of the inning. Florida State made the game even more interesting as D. Stewart singled to center field scoring two more runs to cut the Crimson Tide’s lead to just one after being up by six before the inning started. With runners on the corners and two outs Florida State sends pitch hitter C. West to the plate who sends a deep fly ball to left center field but it wasn’t far enough as Georgie Salem makes a running catch to end the game.
Alabama started it’s scoring in the third inning as Mikey White hit a solo home run over left field making it 1-0. In the fifth White was hit by a pitch and advanced to second after Salem’s sacrifice bunt. Wade Wass reached on a fielding error by Seminole third baseman sending White to third base. Austen Smith then hits a double to right-center scoring White and Wass making the score 3-0. Then in the seventh it was deja-vu as White singled and Salem with another sacrifice bunt sending him to second. But this time Ben Moore hits a single to left field and White gets a great jump on the ball rounding third as the throw comes in from the outfield. White slides in at home just under the tag from the Seminole catcher making the score 4-0. Moore moved to second on the throw home with one out. Wade Wass then hits a two run home run to left field hitting the score board to make give the Tide what would be all the runs they needed in the game making it 6-0 going into the final two innings of the game.
On Sunday Alabama will take on the winner of the second elimination game between Kennesaw State and Georgia State which is being played later today.
