Alabama Gymnastics remains No. 5 after defeating Auburn

UGA_UAGym029The Alabama Gymnastics team delivered a Valentine’s Day gift to head Coach Sarah Patterson this past Friday night as they defeated the Auburn Tigers with a second consecutive score of 197.500 to Auburn’s 197.100.  The win at Auburn allows to Tide to retain the nation’s top five ranking.  With the back to back season-best scores, Alabama only trails No. 1 Oklahoma (197.446), No. 2 Florida (197.392), No. 3 LSU (197.379) and No. 4 Utah (197.135).

A week after scoring its best season high on the floor exercise against Georgia with a 49.625, the Crimson Tide closed out the Auburn meet with a huge balance beam rotation, posting a 49.325 behind career-best scores from freshmen Katie Bailey (9.9) and Aja Sims (9.925).

Alabama is led by Senior Kim Jacob who is ranked in the top 25 nationally in all four events.  With the win over rival Auburn, she moved up two spots to No 12 on the all-around with a 39.344.  Senior Diandra Milliner is tied for 11th nationally on the vault.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier in the next few weeks.  Alabama travels to Oklahoma City this week in their final regular season road meet where it will face Oklahoma, Michigan and West Virginia in the Perfect 10 Challenge on Feb. 21. Alabama then returns home on Feb. 28 against No. 1 Florida for the first of three home meets in a row.
