Will Tide players file away FSU fans’ chant in memory bank?
Well, LSU week is here.
Gotta wonder though if Alabama players may have filed a little FSU fodder away for potential future use.
In the final moments of Florida State’s 41-14 romp over rival Miami Saturday night, FSU fans quickly turned their attention to another team. A team north of Tallahassee. A team that’s won three of the last four BCS national championships. A team that’s currently ranked No. 1 this season — one spot ahead of their beloved Seminoles.
ESPN college football reporter Mark Schlabach, who was there at FSU’s Doak Walker Stadium for the game Saturday night, noted in his Sunday column that FSU fans chanted ‘We want Bama! We want Bama!’ as the game winded down.
Schlabach went on to write that when asked about the fans’ chant, FSU’s Timmy Jernigan replied, “We do. I feel like we can play with anybody in the country. We’re just trying to get to Pasadena by any means necessary. We just want to get out there. Whoever is out there with us is who we’ll play.”
Alabama players had this weekend off. Did some of them take in the FSU-Miami game? Were the ‘We want Bama!’ chants audible in the background during the telecast? Did Bama players hear it?
It’s pretty clear these Bama players know how to play with a little chip on their shoulders when they feel called out or slighted in any way. Remember how Tennessee coaches and players referred to Alabama as ‘the red team’ during game-week preparations for Alabama? Remember the licking the Tide put on those guys? Remember what guys like AJ McCarron and Landon Collins said about how peeved they were about being called ‘the red team’ and how it gave them a little extra motivation?
Any thoughts of an Alabama-FSU matchup in Pasadena are still way premature at this point, even though in the latest BCS standings Sunday night FSU did jump back over Oregon to grab the No. 2 spot right behind No. 1 Alabama. Fact is, there’s still a lot of regular season still to play. Both Alabama and FSU still have a lot of business to take care of — Alabama, for one, has enough to worry about this week with LSU coming to town. Oregon and Ohio State are still in the national title hunt too.
Still, though, gotta think Bama players — whether they heard it for themselves off the telecast or heard about it — aren’t gonna forget how boldly the FSU fans called for the Tide Saturday night.
Or how Jernigan made it clear that it’s not just the FSU fans who want Bama.
