A’Shawn Robinson Makes Immediate Impact
When Julio Jones, Trent Richardson, and T.J. Yeldon committed to Alabama, they were expected to make an immediate impact because of lack of depth. True Freshmen aren’t expected to come into Alabama and make an impact as much as in the past, due to all the depth that Saban has built through recruiting. It is normal now for veterans to dominate playing time with a sprinkle of young talent. It is now a luxury when a true freshmen can come in and make an immediate impact. Outside of Eddie Jackson, the biggest surprise of the 2013 class is possibly the emergence of A’Shawn Robinson.
Nick Saban is not particularly known for playing true freshmen on the defensive line. Robinson, from Forth Worth, Texas, seems right at home in Saban’s stout defense. Although Robinson has only started one game so far this year (Georgia State), his playing time is significantly increasing each game. Robinson is 6th in the SEC and 36th in the nation, with his 4 sacks, he also leads the team. After being 3rd in the nation for freshmen, Robinson is sure to earn post season accolades. He has 17 sacks which is 2nd on the team.
When you compare Robinson’s numbers to most defensive lineman in the past, you see just how sensational his play has been. Saban’s defense isn’t made for the line to have huge numbers. Damien Square led the Alabama with 3.5 last season. The most since Saban stalked the sidelines is recorded by Marcel Dareus, in 2009, which was 6.5. Robinson is most likely on pace to knock those numbers out the park this season.
Nick Saban and his staff is known to be some of the games top recruiters. Robinson played both sides of the football in high school. It seems as though he has a special niche
for defense. Just like others before him, he is sure to have a very bright future with the Crimson Tide and most certainly will be added to list of Tide players playing on Sunday’s
